The client's brief referred to a Residential development with Retail units at Ground level and a Community centre at lower ground level. The latter would replace the now derelict Scout hut which was situated on and commanded most of the site.
As a scheme, the design was very challenging in its own right given its location along the Wimbledon Park Road, its impact on the local vernacular, the close proximity of the local tube station and the tube lines running adjacent. All of which required careful consideration. However, after negotiations with the Local Authority, the design scheme was approved allowing for the development of 12 Apartments (inc 2 Penthouses), 2 retail outlets at Ground floor and a Community Centre, with light wells allowing natural light in, at lower ground floor level.
The proposed design in view of the local vernacular was quite a contemporary idea, which we felt would promote the local streetscape and business thereafter. The glass facades front and rear would provide good natural light into the spaces as well as provide the modern feel we had hoped to convey. The sliding Architectural mesh panels on the front facade, inspired by Wimbledon's historic sporting event (further down the Road) would help provide shading whilst promoting an architectural response. Along with the materials proposed, colours and form we feel the Wimbledon project is a positive addition to the area.
