In association with a new Urban Village development including residential and commercial premises Lawray were appointed by developers Redrow Homes (South Wales) Limited, for the design a new 210 place primary school, complete with Nursery. During the construction phase of the project Lawray continued to act as employers design Architect and were also novated to the successful Contractor.
The site is on the redundant Penallta Colliery and involved extensive ground remediation, with additional specific filling of voids and removal of obstructions in the ground, resulting from many years of tipping.
The brief for the school was developed in close consultation with Caerphilly County Borough Council and in accordance with current design guidance and Building Bulletins.
The design of the school is heavily influenced by the existing adjacent listed Power House which itself is subject separately to redevelopment as Residential Accommodation. The finished school was completed within budgetary constraints and provides an excellent standard of teaching accommodation, opening in September 2008.
